Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology

The Labor Day holiday weekend is one of my favorite weekends to stay in NYC. Between bbq's and the US Open, it ends up being a pretty fun "staycation". It's also the best time to take advantage of how empty the city is with many celebrating the end of summer elsewhere. On Friday, I took full advantage of a quiet city and great weather to check out Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology at the MET.

The latest exhibit by The Costume Institute explored more than just the relationship of garments made by hand or machine. There was the exploration of how fashion changed with the introduction of the sewing machine. The history of haute couture, with its long standing tradition of being made entirely by hand. How modern day machines create fabrics from otherwise impossible materials (like plastic.) Most interesting to me, was seeing how the industry has evolved as a result of mass-produced fast-fashion. As someone in the fashion industry and who loves fashion, it left me with a very interesting and evolved perspective.

Wether you care about fashion or not, this exhibit was one anyone could enjoy. Yes, I could go on and on (and on) about the historical and business side of things. (Fashion history especially puts me in full geek out mode.) But really, this exhibit was about the garments on display. From feather work, to pleating, to lace, to leather, the garments were beautiful as they were intricate.
