After summer, fall is truly one of my favorite times of year to visit Maine. Sure the finicky weather can make packing a bit tricky, but it's truly worth it. Nothing beats fall in New England. It's taken me a few tries but I *think* I've finally figured out the essentials for packing for Maine the fall, without overpacking.

JACKET
A jacket seems like an obvious pick for fall. But given that the temperature can sometimes be in the 80's, Maine's weather can be misleading for some. No matter the forecast, a light jacket, wether it be a field, denim or leather jacket, is a must. In early fall, it may only come in handy during the early morning or evening hours, but come mid to late October, it's usually essential all day. Heading into November, consider very warm layers or bringing a coat.
FISHERMAN SWEATER
Layers are the key to comfort and (warmth!), especially towards the end of the season. A fisherman sweater is cozy and warm enough to wear on its own, but also perfect layered under a jacket on those cooler days. Plus, what's more Maine than a fisherman sweater?
BLANKET SCARF
As blanket scarves have become more popular over the years, they truly have become a staple in my fall wardrobe. It's the perfect layering piece on a warmer day over a tshirt, or as a scarf on those colder days. Not to mention how easily they can be dressed up or down. Wear it out for the day, then out to dinner at night. Can't beat that versatility!
RAIN BOOTS
Learn from my mistake and bring rain boots! When I saw that it would possibly rain while I would be in Portland last week, I decided to purchase a pair of the Hunter Tour rain boots for my trip. (And future travels since they are so light and pack so well!) However, right before I left, the forecast changed to sunny all weekend, so I left them behind. Well, guess what? The weather changed again to rain (I told you it's finicky!) and all I had were a pair of sneakers and a pair of Toms as my closed shoe options. Don't make my mistake! Come prepared for the inevitable sudden changes in weather.
FLAT BOOTS
Unless your time in Maine is going to spent doing something that is specifically outdoorsy, a pair of flat boots are an essential. Cities in Maine like Portland and Freeport are very walkable, making the best way to explore by foot and making a pair of flat boots a better option than a pair of flats for the day. Also, since Maine is more casual and laid-back than a city like New York, they will transition nicely into an outfit for night.
