Whenever people ask me what my favorite layover is, the answer is always Vegas.
Vegas is not a place I thought I would like, let alone love. I’m not a huge partier nor am I a fan of crowds. I tried my hand at gambling once in Monte Carlo and after taking a decent loss, I vowed to never gamble again. I was under the impression that everyone in Vegas spent their entire stay drunk, stumbling aimlessly down the Strip. Hard pass.
My first time going to Vegas was in May of 2017 with work. I was sitting a late home reserve shift, on a day when the weather was just terrible. Things started to deteriorate quickly with flights posting crazy long delays and even cancellations. I knew it was just a matter of time before Scheduling called with a trip. About two hours into my reserve shift, my phone rang. I had been assigned a trip and I was going to Las Vegas.
Out of the four of us working the flight (all reserves!), Vegas was a first for three of us. Even though it would be almost 4am (EST) when we landed, the three of us were determined to make the most of our 27 hour layover. (Yes, even me.) We stayed up until almost 5am local time that night (8am EST!), walking the strip and checking out the different casinos. The next day, we hit the Strip once more, enjoyed amazing tacos at Tacos el Gordo, and soaked up the Vegas heat poolside. Hands down, it was one of the best layovers ever. Since that first trip, I have now been to Vegas with work over 20 times. No two layovers are the same, and it’s the one where I always have the most fun, wether I’m with my crew or by myself.

So what made me change my mind about Vegas? Simply put, experiencing it for myself. There’s just something about the bright lights and complete over-the-top-ness about the city that I find so enticing. People truly do relax and let themselves enjoy the break from their day-to-day lives. On numerous occasions I have heard Vegas referenced as the “adult version of Disney,” and I couldn’t agree more. Being in Las Vegas just makes you happy. (Maybe not when you leave broke and hungover, but for the time being, nothing but smiles.) From the shopping to the food to the variety in entertainment, there truly is something for everyone to enjoy. Given my love of a good meal and luxe shopping, it’s safe to say that I feel right at home in Vegas.
As much as I love my layovers, I’m ready for a leisure trip to enjoy the full Las Vegas experience. Who knows, I may even take my chance at the casino and win it big!
